Choosing the Right Paintings, Selling Worldwide, and Rediscovering Sketching!
Welcome to this week's edition of my art newsletter! I hope you're all doing well and feeling inspired. In this week’s issue, I'd like to share some exciting updates about my art practice and encourage you to explore sketching as a creative outlet. Additionally, I want to invite you to join me at the upcoming Burghfield May Fayre on Sunday, May 21st, 2023, near Reading. So, without further ado, let's dive in!
Choosing the Right Paintings for my art stall
The Burghfield May Fayre is just around the corner, and I'm thrilled to announce that I'll have a stall in the outside arena. As an artist, this event presents a unique challenge: selecting the perfect paintings to showcase. With limited space, I want to strike a careful balance between displaying my best work and showcasing the diverse range of artistic genres I explore. Thankfully, I have a very good friend who has an eye for interior design and has helped me before with setting up my stall to show the paintings in the best way and I am pleased to say she will be helping me again this year. I invite you to witness this curated collection at the May Fayre and see for yourself the type of work I create or talk to me about commissioned pieces.
Celebrating Worldwide Sales
I want to express my deepest gratitude for the unwavering support of art lovers like you. Over the past few weeks, my artwork has found new homes across the globe. It is truly astonishing to witness the reach of my art, with one of my recent pieces soon to embark on a journey to the United States. The ability for my creations to resonate with people from different cultures and corners of the world fills me with immense joy and I am still truly humbled by the idea that other people not only like my work but are prepared to have it displayed in their homes. Your continued support fuels my passion and inspires me to keep pushing the boundaries of artistic expression and if any of you really know me you’ll know I love experimenting with my art. Of course, it doesn’t always go to plan - if you saw my sailing points recently, you’ll know what I mean!
Rediscovering the Joy of Sketching
Recently, I rekindled a cherished practice from my artistic journey: sketching. Despite being engrossed in various projects, I realized the importance of dedicating time to sketching and allowing my ideas to flourish. There is an inherent beauty in the simplicity of pencil or charcoal sketches, and I find them both relaxing and invigorating. Now, I use sketching as a means to develop ideas for future painting projects, exploring composition and arrangements. I would encourage you to try it for yourself, it is somewhat meditative once you get started and time can just fly by before you know it. It certainly beats starting at a TV screen!
If you’ve never sketched before I thought I’d give you a simple guide to get started. Go on, give it a go and let me know how you get on.
Getting Started with Sketching: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gather your materials
Prepare a sketchbook, pencils of varying hardness (ranging from H to B for different tonal values), and erasers.
Step 2: Find a comfortable spot
Choose a quiet and peaceful area where you can fully immerse yourself in the sketching process.
Step 3: Start with loose lines
Begin by lightly sketching the basic shapes of your subject, using simple lines and strokes. Don't worry about precision at this stage; focus on capturing the essence.
Step 4: Add details and shading
Gradually refine your sketch, paying attention to proportions and adding finer details. Experiment with shading to create depth and dimension, using lighter and darker tones to achieve contrast.
Step 5: Practice regularly
Set aside a few minutes each day to sketch, even if it's just a quick thumbnail or a small doodle. Consistency is key to honing your skills and nurturing your creative side.
