Roy P. Awbery Fine Art
How many artists have you ever heard of that are profoundly colour blind? And when I say colour blind, I don’t just mean red-green colour blindness. I have an unusual condition which means I cannot recognise most colours but I do still see in colour. This all means that I have a sometimes interesting twist on my perception of the world and this gets reflected in my paintings.
I have a passion for painting and enjoy creating art that is both fun and desirable. When I started painting I set myself a challenge to paint something every day for 30 days - my 30-day painting challenge. That was quite some time ago and today I still paint every day. Of course, some of my paintings take much more than a day to produce but I still paint every day. Try doing anything every day for 30 days and you will end up with an almost unbreakable habit.
When I began painting I decided that I didn’t want to specialise in a single niche market - there are so many different things to paint that I wanted the freedom to paint what I wanted. So, in my online portfolio, you will see a range of diverse subjects including abstracts.
I’m happy to take commissions and enjoy working with clients to develop an idea. I never paint from images or photographs - everything comes together as I start painting with inspiration coming from things I’ve seen and places I’ve been. I hope you like what I create.
Today, I sell my paintings on my online shop and occasionally at craft shows and fayres.
From Nuclear CSI to Artist
Like some artists, I have a degree, well three to be exact, but none in the arts. In my day job, I am a scientist leading work on nuclear forensics (finding out where nuclear material originated from - think CSI but radioactive!). I started painting as a hobby some 4 years ago and today am officially semi-professional with my artwork selling consistently all over the world. I am, therefore, entirely self-taught and I can thank a ton of books, Youtube tutorials, and my desire to succeed with a great deal of practice, for helping me get to where I am now.
But I’m also a writer - deep down
I love writing! I have always kept private journals and have written stories for my children and grandchildren over the years, although I have never intended to publish any of them. That was, until a couple of years ago when I decided to mix painting with writing and write my first self-illustrated children’s storybooks. I now have two books published: The Scariest Dinosaur and I Saw a Dinosaur, both aimed at 3-7-year-olds. And now, because I love a challenge, I have begun my journey into novel writing - based on a true story about a young girl who wants to become a champion showjumper but is beset with multiple setbacks that hamper her chances of success.
So, with my love of writing and of art, I have decided to start a regular newsletter here on Substack. I hope you enjoy my musings and please let me know what you think.
